Independent Living in the Heart of Runcorn: Mercia Place Set for Spring Launch
With scaffolding coming down and interiors taking shape, Halton Housing’s Mercia Place development, delivered in partnership with Legacie Contracts, is entering its final stages as part of the ambitious Reconnecting Runcorn programme. The scheme is set to hand over in Spring 2026, marking a major milestone in the town’s regeneration.

On Friday 9th January, members of the Runcorn Town Neighbourhood Board were given an exclusive first look at the progress. While taking a tour around the new facilities Sarah Pochin MP for Runcorn and Helsby and Runcorn Town Neighbourhood Board Member said “I am so impressed, the apartments are gorgeous with lovely kitchens, bathrooms and colour schemes. The view is just incredible and being right in the centre of the town with all of the facilities is just great for Runcorn.”
Mercia Place will provide 66-one-and-two-bedroom apartments for Social Rent, available for people aged over 55. This is the first new build scheme developed by Halton Housing to be exclusively at Social Rent, offering high-quality homes designed for independent living.
Located right on Runcorn’s High Street, residents can enjoy easy access to local shops, cafes, community spaces as well as key venues and activities available in the Town Centre. Paul Mullane, Director of Development and Sales at Halton Housing and Runcorn Town Neighbourhood Board Member explained “People here can also access some of the other projects that are part of Reconnecting Runcorn like the Brindley, the new health facility in WELL Runcorn, the station and so many more it really works together holistically.”

Unlike other independent living schemes, Mercia Place will not include on-site facilities such as a bistro or hairdresser. This deliberate decision encourages residents to visit and support local businesses already on the High Street.
“It was important to us that residents came out of the scheme and got out onto the high street itself, and all the amazing businesses, services and venues there are on their doorstep from here.” added Ria Griffiths, the development project manager at Halton Housing.
Taking a step inside Mercia Place the interior is progressing quickly, with the majority of the apartment kitchens installed and bathrooms are being fitted, each of the living spaces are taking shape ready for potential new residents to take a first look around their new home.
Over the coming weeks the finishing touches will begin to the outside, with the focus on the car park which will enable the landscaping works to begin shortly after.
